The Fourth Life She Guarded Me Chapter 31

“Stop. Let me catch my breath.”

She glanced at me.

“Is that all you can handle?”

I glared at her.

“Why didn’t you eat these, too?”

She actually paused to think about it.

“I was going to.”

Then her gaze returned to my face.

“But my instincts told me you might need them. So I saved them for you.”

I opened my mouth.

Not a single word came out.

Every one of these was a top-tier magical material.

Any mage who saw them would lose their mind.

People killed for things like this all the time.

And Paloma had saved me a whole pile of them.

I didn’t believe for a second that she hadn’t wanted to eat them.

It wasn’t that she had no use for them.

It was that, instinctively, she felt I needed them more.

So she had held back.

And carried them all this way.

Holding the pile of treasures, my hands trembled.

“Thank you… for leaving me so many.”

I tried to smile at her. It probably looked awful.

She watched me quietly.

Then she reached out and wiped away the moisture at the corner of my eye with her thumb.

“Why are you crying?”

After saying that, she instinctively put her thumb in her mouth and tasted it.

The next second, her eyes widened.

Then she pounced on me.

The treasures in my arms scattered to the ground.

“What are you doing? Paloma, what’s wrong now?”

She pinned me down and kissed the corner of my eye, sucking hard at the tear.

It wasn’t enough.

She stuck out her tongue and licked at my eye itself.

The sensation made my eyes water again.

And then she suddenly looked annoyed.

“No. The taste is wrong.”

“What’s wrong?”

“It was wrong just now.”

“What are you talking about?”

“When you thanked me, your tears tasted good.”

She gripped my face and glared at me.

“Cry again. Like you did just now. Hurry.”

I couldn’t say a word.

When she saw I couldn’t cry, she kept licking at the corners of my eyes.

But the taste she wanted never came again.

At last, she let out a breath, as if resigning herself.

“I knew it. Something like that wouldn’t keep happening.”

She stood up and wiped her face.

I lay on the ground, staring at the sky, my mind completely blank.

What was she doing?

Why had no one warned me that she would be this hard to raise, and that she was also completely insane?
