You Told Me To Walk So I Walked Right Out Of Your Lives Chapter 33
“When did you put this together?”
“Every time you said you didn’t want a draft, I asked if I could have it.”
I turned to the end.
The last page was blank.
Leo placed a pencil on it.
“Amaris, I used to think that if I got into the same university as you, I’d have the right to make you say yes.”
He looked at me, his expression serious.
“Later, I realized that promises aren’t things you use to bargain for people.”
My fingers paused on the paper.
“So?”
“So I’m not asking you to promise me a lifetime.”
He took a soft breath.
“I just want to ask if, on the next page of your life, you’re willing to let me keep standing beside you.”
The restaurant was quiet.
He didn’t take out a ring, and he didn’t get on one knee.
He just sat there, waiting for me to decide for myself.
I picked up the pencil and, with my right hand, drew two parallel lines on the blank page.
“Let’s start with tomorrow’s class.”
Leo’s eyes lit up.
“Does that mean yes?”
“You can interpret it that way.”
“What about the day after tomorrow?”
“Depends on your performance.”
He laughed, though the corners of his eyes were red.
I lowered my head and kept drawing.
Without thinking, my left hand came up to hold the corner of the paper steady.
It still wasn’t as flexible as it once was, but it was strong enough to hold the page.
