I Died The Day My Husband’s Girlfriend Did A Magic Trick. Chapter 16
“When is that woman going to disappear? I can’t wait to move into your house.”
“Soon. Once she’s gone, the house and everything in it will be ours.”
“I tested the knife. It’s very sharp. She won’t be able to escape inside the box.”
“When the time comes, we’ll just say something went wrong with the prop. No one will suspect us.”
The detective read the messages one by one, then turned the phone toward Caius.
“A minute ago, you said you didn’t know there would be a real knife in the box?”
Caius stared at the screen, at the words he himself had sent, and the last of his defenses crumbled.
Of course he had known.
Not only had he known, he had gone with Josephine to pick out that knife.
That day, they had gone to a hardware store.
Josephine had asked him how long the blade needed to be.
He had said it needed to be long enough to reach the heart.
He had just kept telling himself nothing serious would happen.
He thought, at most, I would get stabbed and bleed a little. I would be frightened. I would leave on my own.
He thought that if he pushed me hard enough, I would give up on the family and walk away with nothing.
Then Josephine could move in.
He had never truly allowed himself to consider the outcome of “death.”
But the reality was more terrifying than anything he had imagined.
“I didn’t mean to kill her…”
His voice broke.
“I really didn’t mean for her to die…”
The detective closed the folder.
“You should have thought of that when you bought the knife.”
