I Died The Day My Husband’s Girlfriend Did A Magic Trick. Chapter 20

A gray prison transport van waited at the end of the hallway.

When the door slammed shut, it made a heavy, final sound.

During Caius’s first year in prison, he refused to eat for three days.

The guards had to force-feed him.

He spent his days curled in a corner, speaking to no one.

Again and again, his mind replayed the past.

He thought of how I had still made him soup while I was pregnant.

He thought of the nights Leo cried, and how I always got up to soothe him while he just rolled over and went back to sleep.

He thought of how I quit my job to stay home, while he complained that I didn’t earn any money.

And he thought of the sound of me pounding against the metal walls of the box.

Those sounds were nailed into his memory, impossible to remove.

He began to suffer from insomnia.

Almost every night, he woke up drenched in a cold sweat.

His dreams were full of snakes.

So many snakes, crawling in from every direction, wrapping around his hands and feet and throat, slithering into his mouth and nose.

He would struggle desperately but find himself paralyzed.

Then he would see me.

I would be standing just outside the mass of snakes, watching him quietly.

Not saying a word.

He would wake up screaming.

His cellmate would throw a pillow at his face.

“Scream one more time and see what happens.”
