I Died The Day My Husband’s Girlfriend Did A Magic Trick. Chapter 21
In Caius’s third year in prison, several inmates cornered him in the restroom during rec time.
The reason was simple.
He screamed too often at night, and no one could sleep.
They pinned him to the floor and drove their fists into his back and ribs, again and again.
He curled up on the cold, damp tiles, protecting his head as blood trickled from his mouth.
He didn’t fight back.
He even felt that this pain was what he deserved.
For the first time, he truly felt the smallest fraction of what I must have felt.
Dark, narrow, inescapable, with no one coming to help.
He lay on the floor, his lips moving over and over.
“Meredith… I’m sorry…”
Of course, no one answered him.
Far away, in a small town, Leo had been sent to live where Caius grew up.
The person taking care of him was Caius’s mother.
Nine-year-old Leo wore old clothes as he weeded the yard.
The cold wind chapped his face, and the backs of his hands were covered in cracks.
The old woman sat in a chair on the porch, scolding him.
“You burden.”
“If it weren’t for your mother, would your father be in prison?”
“There’s nothing left in this family, and it’s all because of you.”
Leo didn’t talk back.
He just lowered his head and kept working.
