My Mother’s Perfect AI Lied And Left Me For Dead Chapter 26
“I know.”
“No. A moment ago, you were still asking me for a chance.”
She froze.
I made every word clear.
“I don’t hate you, and I’m not going to take revenge on you. But I did not come back to be your daughter.”
Claire closed her eyes.
This time, she didn’t beg for forgiveness.
She bent down, picked up the daisies one by one, and placed them in front of Morgan’s photo. Then she stepped back to a distance where I wouldn’t feel crowded.
Westley still hadn’t spoken a word for her.
I turned to him.
“The same goes for you.”
He nodded.
“I understand.”
“You knew I was in the trunk.”
“Yes.”
“You almost opened it.”
“Yes.”
“But you didn’t.”
Westley’s shoulders sagged.
“I didn’t.”
He didn’t mention the construction site. He didn’t say Ava had fooled him.
For the first time, I could look at them without feeling like a child still waiting to be believed.
“Morgan is gone. Whatever years you have left, don’t use the hope of her forgiveness to avoid facing your own lives.”
After I said that, I took my husband’s hand and left the memorial garden.
No one followed us.
On the way home, I got a notice from my daughter’s school.
The school was preparing to introduce a “Student Health and Integrity Support System.” The system would read heart rate and stress changes through wristbands, helping teachers judge whether students were sick, anxious, or lying.
The last line of the notice read:
“This system will provide accurate, objective judgments free from emotional influence.”
I stared at that sentence and sat up straight.
