As we walked out of the courthouse, Juliette chased after us.
“Selena.”
I didn’t stop.
She stepped in front of me.
“You must be feeling very proud of yourself.”
“You took everything from me.”
I looked at her, and the words sounded strangely familiar.
Back in college, she had everything I’d ever envied.
She had money. She was loved. Even a simple slice of cake was something she had the power to bestow.
And yet, it had never been enough for her.
“I didn’t take anything from you.”
“You were the one who left Leo.”
“You were the one who walked away from Patrick.”
“And Preston… he was never yours to begin with.”
Juliette’s face went pale.
“If it weren’t for me, you never would have even met them.”
“Yes.”
I nodded.
“That’s why, for all these years, you’ve thought I should be grateful to you.”
“I did your laundry, I took care of you, and I raised your child for you. You gave me scraps from your table and thought that meant I would always be beneath you.”
“But I paid back that slice of cake a long time ago.”
Her lips moved, but no words came out.
Preston stepped to my side.
When Juliette saw him, tears started to fall again.
“Patrick used to love me so much.”
“You’re right. I’m not Patrick.”
Preston’s voice was cold.
“My brother loving you does not give you the right to use his memory to hurt my wife and my son.”
“Don’t come near Selena again.”
“Every photo you posted and every lie you told will be submitted to the court in the defamation suit.”
Juliette finally panicked.
“You’re really going to sue me?”
“Selena is.”
Preston glanced at me.
“And I respect her decision.”
It was the first time he hadn’t made the decision for me.
I tightened my grip on the document envelope in my hand and walked past Juliette without looking back.Â
