I Let Her Ruin Herself Chapter 05
Dad went to work after dropping me at the hospital that morning.
Mom had been a stay-at-home mom for years, and she stayed to look after me. Around noon, she was about to head down to the hospital cafeteria for a sandwich when her phone rang.
The caller was Taylor’s mother, Carol Spencer.
The moment Mom answered, Carol’s voice exploded from the receiver. Even without speakerphone, I could hear every sharp word.
“What is wrong with your son? Why didn’t he walk Taylor to school today?”
“He promised he’d look out for her, and now look what’s happened!”
Mom froze.
“Wait a minute. Adrian has a high fever. He’s been in the hospital all morning. What happened to Taylor?”
“You need to get him down to the ER right now!”
Carol hung up without another word.
Mom stared at her phone.
“If something happened to her daughter, why is she coming after you?”
I already knew. Derek had gotten to Taylor.
My IV bag had just run dry. The nurse came in to remove the needle and told me to go home and rest.
Taylor was in the same hospital. Mom was so furious she wanted to confront Carol face-to-face, so I went with her to the other side of the emergency department.
