Taylor was sitting in an exam room, her coat buttoned wrong, her hair a mess. Carol stood beside her. A county police officer and a victim advocate were waiting just outside the door.
The doctor said, “The exam confirms recent sexual intercourse and shows some minor tearing. We can’t determine consent from a physical exam alone.”
The officer was about to ask to speak with Taylor alone, but she agreed to let her mother stay.
The officer asked, “Did someone force you? If so, you can give us a name. We’ll protect you, and we’ll investigate.”
Carol gripped her daughter’s shoulder.
“Who was it? Tell the officer.”
Taylor stared at the floor, silent for a long moment.
“It was… Adrian Bell.”
She didn’t want Derek to face any risk, so she gave them my name.
“I knew it!” Carol shouted. “I’ll see him thrown in prison for this.”
Mom and I were standing right outside the door, which hadn’t been fully closed. We heard everything.
Mom shoved it open. “Taylor, I trusted you. Why are you framing my son?”
