After Lefting Me On The Bridge He Lost His Mind Chapter 11

“But on Thanksgiving, you left me on a bridge to help another woman win a bet.”

“And now my hand looks like this because you were too busy protecting her.”

“Mavis, don’t say that about Truett…” Chloe tugged at his sleeve, tears streaming down her face. “This is all my fault. Don’t leave just because you’re angry. If you go, what will people at the company think of him?”

“Shut up.”

I didn’t look at her. Slowly, I slid the ring off my finger.

He had bought it for me four years ago.

Three hundred dollars.

The diamond chips were so small they were almost invisible.

He had said, “When I make director, I’ll replace it with a bigger one.”

But in his first year as director, he bought a woman he’d known for less than three months a twenty-thousand-dollar watch.

I threw the ring at his feet.

Metal hit tile with a sharp, clean sound.

“Truett, this isn’t a tantrum. This is me, formally notifying you that we are over.”

I watched his face turn deathly pale and spoke slowly.

“Go be with your little intern, the one who always needs you to take care of her, the one who needs you to help her win bets. I won’t be around for the rest of it.”

With that, I turned and took the suitcase from Jenna.

“Mavis! You can’t leave!”

Truett finally panicked, trying to rush past the ring on the floor.

Jenna swung the hospital room door shut, sealing his shouts and Chloe’s sobs inside.

“Come on.” Jenna pulled my coat tighter around me. “The climate in Austin will be better for your health.”

“Okay.”

I followed her toward the elevator.

There was a draft in the hallway, and I clutched my coat.

Whether it rained from now on had nothing to do with Truett anymore.
