After Lefting Me On The Bridge He Lost His Mind Chapter 27

When I got back to Austin, the first thing I did was make an appointment with a lawyer.

I handed her my hospital records, the treatment notes for the burn on my hand, and the videos and chat logs from iMessage.

After she reviewed the materials, she looked up at me.

“Are you sure you want to pursue this?”

“Yes.”

I used to think that after seven years together, there was no point in keeping score.

So the rent I paid, the sleepless nights, the thousand little hurts I swallowed—none of it counted.

But that storm on the bridge taught me that some things should never be brushed aside in the name of love.

I signed my name on the authorization form.

My lawyer formally sent Truett a demand for compensation for the damages from Thanksgiving night and all resulting medical expenses.

The evidence was irrefutable.

The car door he had locked himself.

The messages confirming the bet.

And the records from my ER visit and subsequent hospitalization for acute pneumonia.

After Truett received the notice, he called me again from another new number.

“Mavis, do we really have to take it this far?”

“This wasn’t my choice.”

“I’ll pay your medical bills. I’ll pay back everything I owe you from all these years. Just withdraw the claim. Let’s meet, just once. Please?”

“You can discuss compensation with my lawyer.”

“What about the ring?”

His voice suddenly cracked.

“The ring you threw on the floor that day—I kept it. Mavis, I brought it to Austin.”

I held the phone, saying nothing.

“I’m downstairs, outside your office building,” he said, his voice dropping to a near-whisper. “Just give me ten minutes. After we meet, I promise I’ll never bother you again.”
