After Lefting Me On The Bridge He Lost His Mind Chapter 28

Half an hour later, I walked into the lobby.

Jenna was with me, and a security guard stood a few feet away.

Truett was sitting near the entrance.

He was wearing that same dark gray suit, the cuffs now slightly frayed.

I used to iron it for him before every important meeting.

The moment he saw me, he stood up and took the three-hundred-dollar ring out of his pocket.

“I lost the apartment. I lost my job.”

His eyes were bloodshot.

“Chloe took her things and left. Ryan and Leo won’t answer my calls. All I do is think… if I hadn’t tricked you into getting out of the car that day…”

“There are no ‘if onlys.'”

I didn’t take the ring.

“Mavis, let’s start over. I can find work in Austin. I’ll start from the bottom. From now on, I’ll remember your birthday, your allergy… everything.”

“But I don’t need you to remember anymore.”

His hand froze in midair.

“Truett, it was only after you lost your job, your home, and your friends that you finally started to see me. That isn’t love. That’s just realizing you have no one left to clean up your messes.”

“That’s not true.”

“Whether it is or not doesn’t matter anymore.”

I glanced at the ring in his hand.

“Keep it. Let it remind you that some things, once you throw them away, don’t belong to you just because you picked them back up.”

I turned and walked toward the elevator.

Truett took two steps after me, but the security guard blocked his path.

“Mavis!”

I didn’t look back.

Before the elevator doors closed, the last thing I saw was him clutching that tiny ring, slowly sinking to his knees.
