Tit For Tat Chapter 20
“Do you really not love Adrian anymore?”
I looked at her.
There was resentment in her eyes, but also genuine confusion.
As if she couldn’t understand why the man she had fought so hard for was someone I could so easily walk away from.
“Sloane,” I said, “just because you’re desperate to have something doesn’t mean anyone else is obligated to want it back.”
Her face went white. She turned and left without another word.
In the end, Harbor Dock accepted Bennett Global’s financing proposal.
On the day of the signing, Noah was completely professional. The terms were clear, and he made no attempt to leverage our past for any private advantage.
When we were finished, he asked if I wanted to get coffee downstairs.
I said yes.
The café was just below my office building, with people constantly streaming past the street-facing windows.
This time, no one was secretly taking pictures.
Noah slid a brown paper envelope across the table.
“Cole Capital’s investigators contacted me.”
I didn’t touch it.
“Why?”
“They were tracing Sloane’s history of obtaining photos and discovered that three years ago, my family also received images she sent.”
My fingers stilled.
Noah opened the envelope.
Inside were several surveillance screenshots.
Three years ago, my mother had been hospitalized at Red Maple Medical Center for a heart arrhythmia. Adrian happened to be visiting his grandmother in the same building. In the hallway, he had caught me when my blood sugar plummeted.
The screenshots preserved only the moment we were closest.
It looked like I was leaning into his arms.
