Tit For Tat Chapter 28

Tit For Tat Chapter 28

In the spring of the following year, Harbor Dock was officially completed.

I was invited to speak at an urban renewal forum in New York, sharing how the project had rebuilt its governance structure after its financing was interrupted.

The audience was full of investors, developers, and reporters.

Noah sat in the front, on the left.

Adrian sat near the back, on the right.

There were many strangers between them.

During the Q&A, the moderator asked,

“There’s been a lot of discussion over the past year about your canceled engagement and that infamous email. Some people believe that controversy was the catalyst that pushed you to break away from relationship-based family financing. How do you see it?”

I held the microphone.

“First, it was not a gift that helped me grow.”

“That email was sent to 327 people. It caused our project review to be suspended for nineteen days, and screenshots of my private photos are still out there.”

“The fact that I later completed the project does not mean the damage the sender caused should be romanticized.”

The room went quiet.

I paused for a second, then continued.

“As for my biggest change, it’s probably that I no longer use the way other people choose me as a measure of my own worth.”

“Whether someone breaks off an engagement with me, rescues me, cherishes me, or mocks me—none of that determines my value.”

“What matters is whether, when someone crosses a line, I am willing to hit ‘stop’ for myself.”

Applause broke out, rolling through the auditorium.

It went on for a long time.

In the glare of the stage lights, I couldn’t make out Adrian’s expression.

I didn’t try.
