Gabriel stayed at the hospital, sitting with Sienna through every test and exam.
The doctor assured them the baby was fine.
He and Thomas finally took Sienna home.
The moment Gabriel walked in the door, he saw the blood on the floor. Laura was asleep on the couch.
“Where’s Mags? Laura, I told you to take care of her. Why is there so much blood?”
Laura woke with a start, rubbing her eyes.
“She collapsed by the door and called an ambulance herself. I thought she was faking it again, so I just ignored her.”
Gabriel pulled out his phone and finally saw more than a dozen missed calls from the hospital.
He called Margot first, but it went straight to voicemail.
Sienna, looking put out, tugged on his arm.
“Gabe, the baby just kicked.”
Normally, he would press his ear to her stomach and talk to the baby.
This time, he just frowned and pulled his arm away.
He called the hospital back. After the nurse confirmed his identity as an emergency contact, she transferred him to the attending physician.
“Mr. Cross, your wife suffered a miscarriage. She lost a significant amount of blood and was brought in alone by ambulance. We were unable to reach any family members.”
“She underwent a D&C and has already been discharged. She needs to rest now that she’s home.”
Gabriel stood frozen, a single thought consuming him.
The baby was gone.
He and Margot had had a child, and he had never even known.
