He Left Me Broken Now He Wants Me Back Chapter 28

That same afternoon, the Ashbourne company’s board of directors sent an email demanding the theater return the investment.

Jenna’s face was white as she read it aloud.

“The contract doesn’t allow for that.”

“Then we’re not returning it.”

I forwarded the email to our lawyer.

Half an hour later, Rowan called.

“My father wants to meet with you.”

“What for?”

“He thinks you should suspend the show. He also thinks I should publicly distance myself from you so the company’s name stays out of the press.”

Rowan’s voice was unnervingly calm.

“I told him he has no right to make that decision for you.”

“Then why are you calling me?”

The line was quiet for a moment.

“Because you’re the one he wants to see. It should be your choice whether or not to go.”

Leaning against the edge of my desk, I let out a short, dry laugh.

“I’ll go.”

There were seven people in the conference room.

Rowan’s father sat at the head of the table. He looked like an older, colder version of Rowan.

He slid a termination agreement across the table toward me.

“Sign this. The theater returns the remaining funds, and our company won’t pursue the money that’s already been spent.”

“The contract has no early termination clause.”

“The Ashbourne family gave you an opportunity.”

“The opportunity came from Jenna. She read my outline while I was laid up in the hospital, gave me a place to live, and let me finish the script.”
