He Left Me Broken Now He Wants Me Back Chapter 29

I placed our copy of the investment contract on the table.

“What your company gave us was money. Our ticket sales and tour revenue prove that money wasn’t wasted.”

Rowan, who had been sitting off to one side, hadn’t said a word.

His father turned on him.

“This is why you gave up being a doctor? For this?”

The color drained from Rowan’s face.

At last, I understood where the money had come from.

He had traded the life he wanted for the one he hated, all for my play.

But I had never asked him to do that.

“Rowan,” I said. “Leave.”

Every head in the room turned to me.

He looked stunned.

“This is a meeting between the theater company and its investor. You and I are in a relationship. Your presence in this room is the only real conflict of interest here.”

His father let out a cold, humorless laugh.

But Rowan stood up.

“She’s right.”

He gathered his papers and walked out of the room.

After the door closed, I placed my two-year-old story outline and the tour’s box office reports on the table next to the contract.

“The script existed long before the investment. The contract explicitly excludes creative control and gives your company no right to interfere with our production.”

“If you breach that contract, we will sue.”

One of the other directors picked up the contract and read through it silently for a long time.

“She’s right,” he finally said, looking at Rowan’s father.

Mr. Ashbourne didn’t touch the termination agreement again.

When I left the building, Rowan was waiting by the elevators.

“How did it go?”

“Have you forgotten what boundaries are already?”

He froze.

“Sorry.”

I stepped into the elevator. Just before the doors slid shut, I stuck my hand out to stop them.

“They can’t pull the funding.”

His shoulders visibly relaxed.

“And one more thing,” I said, looking him in the eye. “Don’t ever give up what you want for my sake again. I never asked you to.”

The elevator doors closed between us.

He didn’t follow.
