He Chose My Copy I Became The Law Chapter 10

Adrian needed six months to trace me to Porto Aurelia.

On the day he arrived, I was beneath the estate in the negotiation chamber, going over a laundering venture with three elderly vineyard proprietors from Genoa. My deputy slipped through the door and spoke in a muted tone:

“Miss Rinaldi, a gentleman from Ravenport is waiting in VIP Room 3 at the club. He says he is your… husband.”

I placed my fountain pen on the desk, leaving one finger against the document’s edge for a fleeting moment.

“Inform him that I am unavailable this evening.”

“He says he has already waited three days. He wants to discuss the divorce documents.”

For several seconds, I said nothing. “Tell Marco to bring the car around.”

I shut the file and fastened my coat. “We’re going to the club.”

The bodyguard opened the thick, soundproofed door of the VIP room. Adrian stood inside with his back to the entrance, staring into the darkened floor-to-ceiling glass.

Beyond it stretched Porto Aurelia’s nighttime skyline, with the cathedral’s pointed spires etched against the amber radiance of the streetlamps.

The sound of the opening door made him spin around.

During our six months apart, he had grown so thin that I hardly recognized him.

Shadowy circles stained the skin beneath his eyes, while his bespoke three-piece suit drooped from his body, its shoulders hanging as though the clothes belonged to another man.

“Valentina…” His rasping voice sounded ready to break.

I took a seat on the dark leather couch across from him, a long walnut table dividing us. When a waiter filled a glass with an aged dry red, I lifted it and drank.

“Mr. Romano.” I met his gaze. “The divorce papers were delivered to you six months ago. Any concerns regarding the procedure should be directed to my attorney.”

“I never signed them.” He hurried forward, came around the end of the table, and sank onto one knee in front of me. Looking up, he said, “Valentina, I didn’t put my name on a single page. You’re still my wife, and I’m still your husband.”
