I Lost Our Child Chapter 18
The rain kept getting heavier, and we were nearly caught in a flash flood.
I was soaked for hours and came down with a high fever.
During an interview, I fainted.
When I woke up, it was the next day. The rain had stopped.
I opened my eyes and saw Thatcher.
He looked incredibly tense.
The moment he saw I was awake, he rushed to get the doctor.
Thatcher had donated money to the disaster area in his company’s name.
A week later, we returned to New York.
I sent Thatcher a message.
[Thank you.]
He replied quickly, his tone cautious.
[Can I take you out for a meal?]
I wrote back.
[Consider it my thanks. I’ll treat you.]
After the New Year, I was transferred to a branch office in my hometown.
It came with a promotion, and I’d be closer to my parents. I considered it a good thing.
I told Thatcher the news.
He visibly paused.
“Congratulations.”
I said, “Thank you.”
After dinner, he offered to drive me home.
This time, I didn’t refuse.
During the New Year holiday, he came to my parents’ house to visit.
I didn’t want to start an argument, so I didn’t say much.
We were already divorced, anyway.
And in the settlement, I had received a portion of the assets.
At least I hadn’t walked away from the marriage with nothing.
But from the beginning, money had never been what I wanted.
I had just been foolish enough to think he actually loved me.
He was heading back to New York.
I said to him, “Happy New Year.”
“Drive safely.”
He looked like he wanted to say something else, but I had already turned away.
