I Lost Our Child Chapter 19

The day Thatcher realized something was fundamentally broken in his marriage was at his friend’s wedding.

She looked at him as if he were a stranger. Smiled, even, and agreed he looked good with another woman.

To be honest, it hurt.

It also made him angry.

He couldn’t understand how she could say something like that.

But he knew, deep down, that his own repeated failures, his constant hesitation, had pushed her further and further away.

Later, Ava attempted suicide several more times.

Thatcher stopped getting involved.

Leo showed up at his office and started a fight.

Thatcher hit back.

“Leo, I’m not her boyfriend.”

“She was the one who broke up with me.”

“I don’t love her anymore. Her suicide attempts are not my responsibility.”

“What she needs now is a psychiatrist.”

“She needs treatment.”

Leo flew into a rage.

“What the hell is that supposed to mean? You think my sister is sick?”

Thatcher looked at him coldly.

“I didn’t say that.”

“You’re the one who’s thinking it.”

Leo asked him if he still wanted to be friends.

Thatcher said, “At this point, it doesn’t seem like we can be.”

From then on, he cut off contact with all three of them.

He was consumed by regret for how his misunderstandings had destroyed things with Alessa.

He threw himself into his work.

Later, Ava tried to kill herself one last time, and this time it left her with lasting health problems.

Thatcher still didn’t go see her.

This time, Ava truly regretted it.

She cried and made scenes constantly.

Later, she really did want to die.

But her new health issues made just living a painful struggle.
