I Lost Our Child Chapter 26

Ava called me the same night Thatcher’s statement was posted.

Her voice was weak.

“Are you satisfied now?”

I was packing for my trip home.

Her words made me pause.

“Why would I be satisfied?”

“Everyone is cursing me.”

Her breathing grew ragged.

“My work has been suspended.”

“My manager is terminating my contract.”

“Thatcher pushed all the blame onto me, too.”

I folded a shirt and placed it in my suitcase.

“He didn’t push the blame onto you.”

“He only admitted his own part.”

The line went quiet.

Then Ava suddenly asked, “Why didn’t you fight me?”

I didn’t understand.

“The day of the interview, I told you Thatcher was coming to pick me up.”

“I said my first love and I were still in touch.”

“I kept waiting for you to get angry.”

Her voice began to tremble.

“As long as you made a scene, he would think you were being unreasonable and come comfort me.”
