He Chose Her On Our Wedding Night So I Took Everything Chapter 19
He froze for a moment, then lowered his eyes.
“Paige told you?”
“Was it you?”
He was quiet for a few seconds before nodding.
“Yes.”
“Why didn’t you ever say anything?”
“Eric told me he was the one who saved me.”
Wyatt’s expression changed.
“That’s what he told you?”
I nodded.
“I always thought that was the story everyone knew.”
Wyatt frowned.
“I went abroad for college right after that summer and lost touch with most people from back then. By the time we met again, you were already planning your wedding.”
“I knew you and Eric had been together for a long time, but I had no idea he had lied to you about this.”
A flood of old memories rushed back.
I was twelve years old, and I had slipped on the wet dock. After inhaling a mouthful of water, I lost consciousness.
When I woke up, Eric was sitting by my bed in the camp clinic.
He told me he had jumped in to save me.
For years, I had believed him.
Because I thought I owed him my life, I found a reason to forgive him every time he let me down.
Now, I knew that too had been a lie.
“Why didn’t you ever bring it up?”
Wyatt met my gaze.
“Saving you shouldn’t be a reason for you to accept me.”
“I wanted you to get to know the person I am now, not feel like you owed me something for the past.”
My eyes began to sting.
“When you jumped into the water, what were you thinking?”
He paused, a faint smile touching his lips.
“At first, all I could think was that I had to get you out.”
“Later, after you woke up, the first thing you asked about was the sample book you’d dropped in the lake. You wanted to go back and fish it out. All I could think was, how is this girl so stubborn?”
I laughed, a real laugh this time.
I had loved collecting fabrics since I was a little girl. I had brought a binder full of swatches and sketches with me to summer camp.
