The Day I Went Silent Chapter 16

Two months later, at an airport in China.

Olivia wore a fitted tracksuit, dragging her suitcase as she walked and texted a certain unhappy someone.

“I still have to finish my Ph.D., why wouldn’t I come back after returning to China?”

“I’m really just coming back for a visit.”

“Meilani cried? Why do I find that so hard to believe? She’s never that fussy…”

In the crowd waiting at arrivals, someone raised a hand and waved vigorously: “Olivia.”

Olivia’s eyes lit up. She locked her phone and rushed over to hug the woman: “Mom.”

Eleanor hugged Olivia back tightly, her eyes red and her voice choked with emotion: “You’re finally back…”

Olivia also felt a pang of sadness and said guiltily, “I’m sorry for suddenly leaving to study abroad without discussing it with you.”

“What are you sorry for? We all know you must have suffered grievances at the Vances, and you just didn’t want us to worry.”

Eleanor insisted on taking her suitcase and led her to the car.

She rambled on: “Look at you, always so stubborn since you were little. Even though we can’t compare to the Vances, we won’t just let them bully you. Why didn’t you come home when you were wronged?”

“I said long ago that Julian is no good. And that son of his is just like him.”

Olivia shrank back obediently in her seat, not daring to cross her mother.

Eleanor had never liked Julian, feeling that a man who could cause such a scene for Chloe was not a good man.

In the past, Olivia would be very defiant. Whenever Eleanor spoke ill of Julian, she would immediately jump to his defense.

But hearing these words now, Olivia’s heart was as calm as still water.

After being away for a few months, she could no longer find that initial flutter in her heart.

After talking for a long time, Eleanor sighed: “Forget it, you being well now is more important than anything else.”

“You have no idea. Julian thought you were on that crashed plane, thought you were dead, and went completely crazy.”

“Acting as if he loves you so much — what was he doing for the past three years?”

“I didn’t tell him you were still alive either, let him suffer. It’s just that he’s in such a state, insisting on holding a funeral for you, and it happens to be your dad’s birthday, so I had you come back for a trip…”

Olivia followed her words and imagined it for a moment.

Julian holding Oliver, crying in front of her ancestral tablets…

She shivered, getting goosebumps all over, and couldn’t help but laugh at herself.

What was she thinking? How could Julian care about her that much?

And Oliver, finally able to be with his mother, should be very happy.

Olivia said softly, “I’m still alive, so him holding a funeral for me is indeed bad luck. I’ll make an appearance at Dad’s birthday banquet and tell him to stop acting crazy.”
