Make Them Regret It Chapter 28
“Blythe, the pieces can be repaired.”
That was the first thing Colton said.
He was still wearing that black suit. The blood on his shirt had dried to a dark brown. His palms were covered in cuts, as if he hadn’t bothered to treat them.
A small toolkit sat on the hood of the car, filled with tiny repair instruments and adhesive.
“The engagement is gone, but we can make a new one.” He looked at me, his eyes pleading. “As long as you’re willing, we can still…”
“Still what?”
His mouth opened, then closed.
“Start over.”
I walked to the car and took one of the fragments from his hand.
Half a pattern remained on its surface. I had carved it myself when I was twenty, thinking it would protect me for life.
I learned later that metal can’t save anyone.
The only one who can protect you is yourself.
Seeing me take the piece, Colton immediately pushed the toolkit toward me.
“I already asked a craftsman. As long as all the pieces are here, and we each give a drop of blood—”
I set every last fragment down on the hood of the car.
