Make Them Regret It Chapter 39

When the list of compensated assets was delivered to me, I kept none of it.

I used the funds to buy an abandoned old house far outside the estate district.

It was a long way from Romano Manor. When you pushed open the windows, sunlight poured in.

I hung a sign over the door:

Lighthouse.

The new head of the family asked me, “What is this for?”

“For anyone who wants to leave.”

If a woman in the family was being harmed by relatives under the excuse of “private family matters,” she could come here. Women from outside with nowhere else to go could live here, too.

There were no high walls.

Every door could be opened from the inside.

The very first rule I made was that every room had to have lights at night, and heat.

The housekeeper asked if that meant heat even in the summer.

I said yes.

Even if it was never needed, the people who came here had to know that if they ever said they were cold, someone would listen.

My grandmother planted a patch of roses in one corner.

I invited designers to teach handicrafts. In the back garden, several jars of cherry wine were buried.

Every month, doctors came to the infirmary to give everyone a full checkup.
