He Replaced His Wife And Lost His Mafia Empire Chapter 06

Dominic pushed open the bedroom door at midnight.

He had been drinking, but his eyes were clear.

The suitcase was already closed. I was taking my passport, audit license, and private papers out of the safe.

“You’re really leaving?”

“Yes.”

“Where are you going?”

“Home.”

Leaning against the doorway, Dominic let out a cold laugh.

“This is your home.”

“The place that removed me from the formal portrait and the protection roster in the same night?”

“The picture again.”

Impatiently, he yanked off his tie.

“I just wanted Sloane to have one nice night. You’ve been the boss’s wife for five years. Why are you still competing with an assistant?”

“If it was just one night, then why have you never once let me sit there?”

Dominic had no answer.

He stared at my suitcase as if he was finally realizing the situation had slipped from his control.

“What did your brother say to you this time?”

“This has nothing to do with Miles.”

“Of course it does. The Costas have always been waiting to see me fail.”

He strode over and slammed the safe shut.

“You can leave, but you don’t get to take what the Moretti family gave you.”

Anything kept in the family vault was, by default, under the boss’s control. Dominic had once used that rule to protect my property. Now he was using it to keep me from leaving.

I looked down at the cashmere coat I was wearing.

He had bought it for me in our second year of marriage, to make up for my missing the dinner.

I took it off and laid it on the bed.

The earrings, the bracelet, the shoes—he had given me all of them, too.

I removed them one by one.

At last, all I had left was the thin dress underneath and the necklace my mother had given me.

“Is that enough?”

Dominic’s jaw locked.

He had only meant to scare me.

He had expected me to hesitate, to admit that without Moretti money and protection, I couldn’t survive in his city.

But the suitcase I packed held only clothes I had bought before our marriage, my license, and my personal documents.

I pulled it toward the door.

Dominic blocked me again.

“Leave the passport and your wallet, too.”

“They’re mine.”

“If they were kept in a Moretti family safe, my people inspect them first.”

He tore my handbag from my grasp and threw it back into the room.

“You want to leave so badly? Then let’s see how far you get on your own without my car, my money, or my protection.”
