He Replaced His Wife And Lost His Mafia Empire Chapter 15

Dominic came to the hospital every day for a week.

He stopped demanding to be let in. He just stood at the far end of the hallway and waited.

Sometimes he brought flowers. Sometimes food I used to like.

The guards returned everything untouched.

On the eighth night, he slipped into my room during a shift change.

When I woke, he was sitting beside my bed.

The man who had once always looked immaculate now had bloodshot eyes and a wrinkled coat. There was no gun at his waist. The Costa guards would never have let him approach me armed.

“Evelyn.”

He reached out as if to touch me. I hit the call button immediately.

Dominic’s hand froze in midair.

“I just want to say a few things.”

“Get out.”

“I already sent Sloane away. I took back the pearl necklace.”

He pulled a jewelry box from his pocket and set it beside the bed.

“Margaret agreed to give it to you, officially. From now on, in every family portrait, you’ll sit by my side. Your signet ring will be returned. No one will ever be able to strip your protection again.”

I didn’t open the box.

“You still don’t get it.”

“Then tell me.”

Dominic’s voice shook.

I pulled back the blanket and showed him my foot, still wrapped in bandages.

“When you pushed me out that door, you took my phone and my papers.”

“You knew one order from you was enough to make every guard and driver too afraid to help me.”

“I waited in that boathouse for hours, waiting for you to remember there was a snowstorm outside.”

“You never came.”

“And now you bring back a necklace and a signet ring and ask me why I won’t sit back down in my old seat.”

All the color drained from Dominic’s face.

“I really thought you’d come back to the door.”

“You thought I would always come back.”

The guards rushed in and pulled him away from the chair.

Dominic didn’t struggle. He just kept looking at me.

“Give me one more chance.”

“There aren’t any left.”
