My Fiancé Chose Her So I Chose Myself Chapter 13

I closed the folder.

“If your board cannot accept these terms, Northstar will pursue other acquisition targets. We will not change our valuation based on management’s personal feelings.”

Travis gripped his pen so tightly the knuckles went white.

He looked at me and finally seemed to understand that I would no longer back down just because he frowned.

No agreement was reached.

That afternoon, I went down to the parking garage to get my car.

I had just reached it when Evan burst out from behind a concrete pillar.

He reeked of alcohol, his eyes red and raw, as if he’d been crying.

“Nat!”

He flung his arms open and lurched toward me.

I stepped back instantly and hit the panic button on my key fob.

The car alarm shrieked through the empty garage.

Evan froze, and fresh tears streamed down his face.

“Don’t do this to me, okay?”

He was sobbing now, his breathing coming in broken gasps.

“For three years, I’ve thought about that day every single day. I shouldn’t have always put Jenna first. I shouldn’t have treated you like that at urgent care. I was wrong.”

He lifted a hand and slapped himself hard across the face.

The sound echoed through the garage.

“You can hit me, too. I’ll do anything, just please, forgive me.”

I looked at him and felt no satisfaction, only a profound disgust.

“Do you think that just because you admit you were wrong, I’m obligated to forgive you?”

He went rigid.

“At urgent care, you grabbed the hand I’d just had an IV in and accused me of stalking you. In that moment, did you care if I was in pain?”

Evan’s face went deathly white.

“I’m sorry. I didn’t see… and the scent filters, I couldn’t smell…”

“You shouldn’t need to smell blood to respect me when I tell you to let go.”

I opened the car door and slid into the driver’s seat.

“And I don’t need your apology anymore. To me, you’re just a director on the other side of a transaction.”

I rolled up the window, leaving him standing there in the piercing shriek of the alarm.
