They Canceled My Ticket I Canceled Them Chapter 19
“You can have your umbrella back. Don’t block my car again.”
I turned and got back into the car without a second glance.
The car pulled away smoothly.
In the rearview mirror, Marcus was still kneeling in the rain. He clutched the folding umbrella, and his shoulders began to heave with sobs.
The next day, two unannounced visitors arrived at my office.
Daniel and Tyler were carrying a familiar cake box.
“Ellie…”
Daniel stood awkwardly in front of my desk and set the box down.
“I remember this chestnut cake was your favorite. I waited in line for two hours to get it.”
Tyler stepped forward.
“When you used to get upset, a little cake always cheered you up. We know we neglected you. We want to make it up to you, okay?”
I sat back in my chair, looked at the cake, and laughed.
“Did you really forget, or did you just never listen?”
I stood, picked up the cake box, and dropped it into the trash can.
The box landed with a dull thud.
Daniel and Tyler both flinched.
“I told you, over and over, that I don’t like chestnuts. Madison does. You made me eat it with her once, and I ended up in the ER with gastritis.”
I braced my hands on the desk and looked at them.
“You want to make it up to me? With what? Your nearly bankrupt company? Or another gift I never wanted?”
I pressed the intercom button on my desk phone.
“Please have security escort these two gentlemen out. If they return, there’s no need to inform me.”
