His Love Is Not Visible Chapter 01
After I lost our baby, I started avoiding Garrett Bancroft.
We had a vicious fight.
He lowered his eyes, his face a blank mask.
“Vanessa was my first love. I hadn’t let her go when I married you. You’ve always known that.”
“You were fine with me having an ex three years ago. Why does it suddenly bother you now?”
From that day on, I stopped asking about him and Vanessa Hale.
We lived apart for nearly three months before we ran into each other at the hospital.
Garrett asked me, “Why didn’t you tell me you were hurt? Couldn’t you have called?”
I thought about it for a moment.
“Forget it. Let’s get divorced.”
Garrett froze.
. . .
After that fight, Garrett and I lived apart for nearly three months.
He moved into the company apartment downtown, and we saw each other only a handful of times.
This time, I didn’t reach out to him first.
I ate, I slept, I went about my life. I hardly thought of him at all.
When I saw Garrett at the hospital, we both paused.
He was laughing with Vanessa. They stood side by side, so easy and natural together it hurt to look at.
Vanessa was dressed lightly, with Garrett’s wool coat draped over her shoulders.
If Garrett weren’t my husband, I would have thought they were the perfect couple.
I was at the hospital for a final check-up on my wound. I never expected to run into them.
Strangely, seeing them together didn’t spark a single flicker of jealousy.
All I could think about was whether I wanted fried chicken or steak for dinner.
Garrett saw me, too.
I was about to turn and find another way out, but he caught up to me, his fingers closing around my wrist.
“Why are you at the hospital?”
I was still trying to decide how to answer when Vanessa spoke from behind him.
“Garrett, our appointment is soon. Can you come upstairs with me?”
Then she looked at me.
I smiled at them both.
“You two go on. I’m leaving.”
Garrett had wanted me to stop asking questions, to stop being jealous. Well, now I could. Perfectly.
My performance deserved an Oscar.
Who would have guessed I was his wife?
I pulled my hand free and walked out of the hospital alone.
I found a fried chicken place nearby. After three months of watching what I ate, I could finally eat whatever I wanted.
I had just sat down when my phone rang. It was Megan Ross.
“Laurie, have you eaten?”
“I’m having fried chicken.”
She paused.
“Garrett still doesn’t know? About the miscarriage, the burns?”
“No. I came in today to get the dressing changed, and I ran into him.”
“You didn’t tell him?”
I let out a sigh.
“No.”
“And he didn’t ask why you were at the hospital?”
I took a sip of my Coke.
“He was there with Vanessa. After the way we fought, I knew this marriage was over.”
“There was no chance to say anything then. And later… I didn’t want to.”
Megan swore.
“He’s such an asshole.”
