His Love Is Not Visible Chapter 15
I’d been too busy with work to bring up the divorce again, and Garrett had never given me a straight answer.
This weekend was his grandfather Walter Bancroft’s birthday, and the family was holding a gathering at their home in Park City.
We hadn’t told our families we were separating, so I couldn’t just not show up.
We had been married for three years and were still childless. At every family gathering, someone always asked when we planned on having them.
In the past, I was the one who wanted children, and Garrett wasn’t ready.
Whenever anyone pressed the issue, he would run interference for me.
“I’m too busy with work right now. I’m not ready to be a father.”
This time, when one of his aunts asked again, Garrett actually smiled.
“We’re trying.”
I said nothing.
We had already lost a child.
From the night that child left us, our marriage had already begun to end.
After the party, Garrett drove me back to Salt Lake City.
I looked at the red light ahead and spoke first.
“Garrett, when my grandfather had his surgery, your family helped us with the medical bills. I’ll pay you back.”
He frowned.
“Laura, why are you bringing that up now?”
“Because we’re getting divorced.”
Garrett slammed on the brakes. Luckily, we were already almost stopped at the light.
“Divorce?”
“Yes. Your family paid those bills. I’ll take out a loan and repay you.”
He gave a harsh, humorless laugh.
“Are you that eager to erase every connection between us?”
I was offering to pay him back. He should have been glad I wasn’t trying to claim his family owed me anything.
Why was he using that tone?
“Yes. That’s exactly it.”
Garrett stared at the traffic light, his hand clenched tight around the steering wheel.
