His Love Is Not Visible Chapter 21
On the Fourth of July, I went back to Cedar Falls, Iowa.
I was planning to ask my parents to move to Salt Lake City with me.
Under the divorce settlement, I received an apartment and part of our shared assets, enough to start over.
My grandfather was old. He preferred staying at the farm, tending his vegetable patch and his rows of corn.
My parents were already retired. They decided to move to Utah to stay with me until I had fully recovered.
Fireworks bloomed in the night sky.
My family and I stood in the yard, our heads tilted back to watch.
“Laura.”
A low voice came from behind me.
I turned and saw Garrett standing at the edge of the driveway.
He had driven all the way from Salt Lake City to Iowa just to see me.
“Laura, happy Fourth of July.”
I looked at him and smiled, this time sincerely.
“You too.”
Summer moved on.
I was promoted to department manager.
My parents moved to Salt Lake City. My grandfather stayed on the farm, looked after by my aunt and uncle, who lived nearby.
As the company celebration dinner was ending, I received a screenshot from Garrett.
It was a call log from the phone company for that snowy night months ago.
Next to the number I had dialed, it clearly said connected.
But on his phone, there was no record of that call.
