He Chose Another Heir Now He Wants Me Back Chapter 36

The fishing village was almost deserted. Demolition notices were nailed to the doors of abandoned houses, and weeds grew knee-high through cracks in the concrete.

Two chairs sat outside the innermost wooden house.

A man was sitting in one, soaking in the sun.

Even from a dozen yards away, I recognized him.

Ray had gotten old.

Eighteen years ago, he’d been in his forties, broad-shouldered, with hands strong enough to pull me from a rushing river. Now his hair was mostly white, his frame gaunt, his cheekbones sharp.

Only his eyes were the same—dark and clear.

When he saw me, he grinned, revealing a capped tooth.

“The little girl grew up.”

I crouched in front of him.

“The chestnuts were good. I’ve tried them from all over. None of them ever tasted as good as the ones you bought.”
