The Daughter They Abandoned Is The Doctor They Can’t Reach Chapter 19
The day after the ceremony, a call came from a number I didn’t recognize.
When I answered, there was silence for a few seconds.
“Nora. It’s me.”
Tessa’s voice was hoarse.
“I wanted to apologize. For yesterday, and for everything before.”
She started crying as she spoke, haltingly telling me that she was going to talk to her aunt and uncle and have the 529 fund transferred back to my name.
“The computer, the money, everything they gave me… I can give it all back.”
“You don’t need to.”
Her breath caught. “But it was yours.”
“You didn’t take it, Tessa. They gave it to you.”
I looked out at the bright morning light, my voice calm.
“And even if you hadn’t been there, they would have found some other reason.”
Silence stretched on the other end of the line.
Long enough that I thought she might have hung up.
“Nora,” she finally asked in a low voice, “do you hate me?”
“I don’t.”
When the words came out, I realized they weren’t heavy at all.
“I just don’t want to live that way anymore. Hating you would take energy, and I want to use my energy on other things.”
Tessa sniffed. “Then what about us… going forward?”
“You should just live your own life.”
It was a blessing.
And it was a boundary.
She didn’t ask anything else, and I didn’t explain any more.
After I hung up, I left the number in my call log without saving it.
Outside, people crossed the lawn with books in their arms, sunlight on their shoulders.
I put my phone away and headed out, too.
