He Protected My Baby’s Killer So I Left Him Chapter 08

Isabella didn’t leave.

She stood in the nursery doorway, crying as she tried to explain.

“I didn’t know Soleil would actually leave.”

“You all said she was just angry.”

“You were the ones who told me to move in.”

Leo sat on the couch, his head in his hands.

At his feet was a new pair of slippers he’d bought for Isabella.

They were pink, with a cat embroidered on the front.

He stared at them and suddenly thought of Toast.

Seven years ago, when Matteo and I first brought the kitten home, Leo had complained the most.

He’d said he didn’t like cats, but he was the one who started bringing over cans of food every week.

Whenever I went on a business trip, he was always the first to volunteer to come over and feed him.

But yesterday, he had been the one to shove Toast into a carrier.

The cat had cried the entire time.

All Leo had felt was irritation.

He hadn’t even looked back.

Leo took out his phone and called the kennel.

The employee told him the cat had already been picked up by his owner.

“That poor woman looked like she was in really bad shape.”

“She just stood outside holding the cat for the longest time. I thought she was going to faint.”

“If you’re her family, how could you let her come get him by herself?”

Leo had no answer.

After he hung up, Marco pulled a cardboard box from a storage cabinet—one that hadn’t been thrown out.

Inside were several pregnancy journals.

And the parenting books the four of them had taken turns buying for me.

The pages were covered in notes.

Matteo had underlined three passages in the section on pregnancy nutrition.

Nico had copied every single one of my prenatal appointments into his own calendar.

Leo, deciding the baby’s nickname wasn’t cute enough, had filled two pages with alternatives.

Marco had even drawn up a shift schedule.

He’d said that after the baby was born, the four of them would take turns with night duty so I would never get too exhausted.

After Isabella came back, all of those promises had vanished.
