My Composure After Divorce Became His Greatest Torment Chapter 05
I stared at the caller ID, my fingers tightening on my phone.
The deed to the apartment hadn’t been registered yet. The trust transfer wasn’t complete. If this blew up into a legal battle now, Nathan could easily use it as an excuse to delay the settlement.
I answered. It was his voice.
“What did you do to Caroline? Why did you send a lawyer’s letter?”
His tone was so sharp with anger that for a split second, I thought he might at least ask for my side of the story.
I turned and looked out the window.
“I didn’t do anything to her. The letter was a formal response to her email.”
Nathan’s voice was tight with restraint. “Elise, we agreed to handle this peacefully.”
Before I could reply, I heard Caroline’s choked sobs in the background.
“I was only trying to help her plan for the birth! If she didn’t like it, fine, but why twist my intentions and threaten me with lawyers?”
Nathan didn’t seem to need any other explanation. His voice went cold.
“Caroline was thinking of the baby. Turning a private conversation into a legal threat was completely out of line.”
I stood up, my own anger rising.
He hadn’t read her transition plan. He hadn’t questioned what right she had to schedule my surgery or demand my medical password.
He hadn’t even asked why I’d sent it to a lawyer in the first place.
The last flicker of hope inside me died.
Nathan paused, then his voice became a command. “Apologize to Caroline.”
I gripped the phone, saying nothing.
“And have your lawyer withdraw that letter,” he added, each word a stone.
