My Composure After Divorce Became His Greatest Torment Chapter 09

After the consultation, I folded the appointment slip, tucked it into my bag, and walked out of the clinic, my face pale.

Nathan was leaning against a car at the bottom of the steps. He looked like he’d been waiting for a while.

My steps faltered. I turned to walk around him.

“Elise.”

He caught up and grabbed my wrist. At that exact moment, a hurried passerby bumped into me, and Nathan instinctively pulled me into his chest, turning to shield me from the impact.

His familiar scent enveloped me. Once, it had made me feel safe. Now, the gesture felt so false it turned my stomach.

I shoved him away and took two steps back.

“Don’t touch me.”

Nathan’s hand froze in midair, a flicker of frustration on his face.

“Why are you here? Are you not feeling well?”

“My private affairs are no concern of Mr. Prescott’s.”

He frowned, clearly unused to such formality from me. After a beat, he lowered his voice.

“Elise, about the email…”

I gave him a cool, silent stare.

When it was clear I wasn’t going to respond, he had no choice but to continue. “I looked into it. Caroline overstepped. I’m apologizing to you on her behalf.”
