My Composure After Divorce Became His Greatest Torment Chapter 19

I pulled into my driveway, and Nathan got out of his car.

I heard his footsteps on the porch steps behind me before I finally turned.

“Mr. Prescott, is it appropriate for you to be following a single woman to her home?”

The formal address made his face go pale.

“Elise, I regret everything.”

His eyes were filled with a pain I’d never seen before, his voice hoarse.

“I never loved Caroline. The person I’ve always loved is you. I only helped her because I owed her a debt.”

I kept my hand on my keys and said nothing.

After a long pause, he started to explain.

Years ago, when his mother was dying, Caroline had been his fiancée. She’d given up her studies in Europe to be with him at the hospital, caring for his mother until the very end.

“I never forgot that. Later, after her own divorce, she came to me with nowhere else to go. I couldn’t turn her away.”

I hadn’t expected an explanation, but hearing it stirred nothing inside me.

Nathan looked at me, his expression almost pleading.

“She can’t have children, and both her parents are seriously ill. They don’t have much time. She just wanted them to see her settled in a complete family.”

His throat worked.

“She wanted her parents to be able to die in peace.”
