After Losing My Memory Don Begins A Good Husband. Chapter 05

I held Oscar’s body and staggered out of the clinic.

Tears blurred my vision.

All I could hear was the blaring of traffic.

In a daze, a blinding beam of headlights cut through the night.

I felt my body lift, like a kite with its string cut loose.

Meanwhile, in the ballroom atop the Bellevue Hotel.

Crystal chandeliers blazed. Champagne flowed.

Tonight wasn’t just the fifth anniversary gala for Ricardo’s family business.

It was also the night he planned to propose to Valentina.

Three years ago, my intrusion had brought their marriage to an abrupt end.

Now, he’d finally cleared away every obstacle.

Ricardo stood by the floor-to-ceiling window in a bespoke suit.

He held a champagne flute, but his brow was faintly creased.

“Ricardo, what’s wrong? They’re about to cut the cake.”

Massimo strolled over with his glass and clapped him on the shoulder.

Ricardo glanced at his phone screen—no messages.

“Elina hasn’t replied to anything.”

“No matter how upset she gets, she’s never ignored my calls before.”

Giada swept over in an elaborate evening gown.

“Bro, why do you even care?”

“She’s obviously pulling a disappearing act on purpose, trying to guilt-trip you into running back to grovel.”

“You’re putting a ring on Valentina’s finger tonight. Don’t let that woman ruin the mood.”

Massimo chimed in.

“Exactly. Elina’s playing the retreat-to-advance card, and badly. Wait till she sees the proposal video online tomorrow—she’ll probably trash the apartment.”

Ricardo tamped down the inexplicable unease gnawing at him and drained his champagne in one gulp.

“Have the PR team’s press release ready. Tomorrow, I want to see nothing but congratulations for me and Valentina.”

The gala began.

Ricardo took Valentina’s hand and led her to center stage.

The large screen began playing highlights of their history together.

Fresh-faced university photos. Sweet vows from their first wedding.

Everything was perfect.

Until the final minute of the video.

The screen flickered, then went blinding white.

One after another, high-resolution screenshots of chat logs appeared.

The “Real Family” group chat, in its entirety.

And not just that—hospital surveillance stills showing Ricardo canceling my specialist appointment to give it to Valentina.

Audio recordings of Massimo and Giada conspiring in the group to fabricate dirt and frame me as the other woman.

The room went dead silent.

Every guest stared wide-eyed at the bombshell unfolding on screen.

Ricardo’s face drained of all color.

“Turn it off! Turn it off now!”

He screamed at the AV booth.

Valentina stood beside him, trembling, tears brimming.

“Ricardo, what’s happening? Who’s doing this to us?”

Giada panicked, screaming at the crowd below.

“Ricardo, what’s happening? Who’s doing this to us?”

Giada panicked, screaming at the crowd below.

“It’s definitely that bitch Elina! She’s just jealous!”

But the screen wouldn’t shut off.

The final image was the marital dissolution agreement I’d personally signed.

Written in plain terms: leaving with nothing, never to see each other again.

Dated that very afternoon.

Ricardo stared at the signature on screen, his mind roaring with white noise.

She was really divorcing him.

And she’d made every piece of evidence public.

This meant the utter destruction of the Moretti family’s reputation—and the devoted-husband image he’d so carefully cultivated.

“Elina!”

Ricardo clenched his jaw and tore out his phone, dialing my number like a man possessed.

“The number you have dialed is currently switched off.”

He tried over a dozen times. The same mechanical voice every time.

A terror unlike anything he’d ever known seized his heart.
