My Fiancé Had A Secret Wife Chapter 05
“Hart, Evelyn M. — β-hCG positive. Gestational age approximately six weeks.”
Adrian couldn’t tear his eyes off the words.
The room tilted. He had to grip the edge of the table to stay upright.
“Evelyn—she was pregnant? Then the blood on the floor…”
Lucas leaned in for a look. All the color drained out of his face.
Serena went still.
She stared down at the wide, half-dried patch of red on the floor, and her hands started to shake without her permission.
She had just… killed an innocent baby?
Not just any baby. The child of the woman who had been her closest friend. The child of her husband’s own sister.
“I—I just panicked, that’s all. Noah was missing. Anyone would’ve lost it—”
“Why wouldn’t she tell us she was pregnant? No, it can’t be. She’s a doctor—she wouldn’t have gone down that easily. She must have faked this report. She’s trying to trick us!”
At the mention of the baby, Vivian’s eyes flicked, almost involuntarily, toward Lucas. There was guilt written all over her.
She recovered quickly, forcing a thin agreement. “Right. Dr. Hart is a brilliant surgeon. Nothing could really happen to her. Let’s just go to the hospital and check on her, quickly.”
As she spoke, she waited for the exact moment everyone was turning away.
Then she reached out, slow and careful, and tried to slip the USB drive off the table.
She didn’t notice Adrian.
He had come back to himself just in time to catch it.
A man whose heart had once stopped—who had been dragged back from the edge by Evelyn’s own hands—knew better than anyone what it felt like to be cornered against death.
Which meant he knew, with absolute certainty, that the report Evelyn had left behind was real.
And he knew Evelyn. She had never once swallowed an injustice quietly. After what they’d done to her tonight, she would have left something behind.
In the next instant, he snatched the USB drive out of Vivian’s hand and shoved it into the laptop.
“Adrian, don’t—”
Vivian’s face changed. She lunged for it. Too late.
Lucas realized what was happening at the same second. His voice cracked, loud and panicked in a way none of them had heard before.
“Adrian—you can’t watch that—”
There was only one file on the drive.
Footage that I’d asked a friend on the force to pull for me, after the D&C.
The truth had always been sitting there on a security feed. All any of them had to do was ask. Call the police. Watch the tape.
Instead, they’d all decided, with total conviction, that I was unhinged enough to hurt a baby.
None of them had wanted to believe I was innocent.
No one knew, after I saw that footage and understood what had really happened—
—how cold I had gone. How much rage was inside me.
“What is this? What did the two of you do behind my back?!”
The instant the footage began to play, Serena’s eyes went red-rimmed, wide enough it looked like they might split open. Her whole body started shaking and wouldn’t stop.
Every second of the baby’s disappearance was there on that video. Frame by frame.
And the funny thing—the sick, sick joke of it—
The one who had lost the baby wasn’t me.
It was Vivian. And Lucas.
