He Made An Exception For Her But Never For Me Chapter 06
Severe concussion.
Multiple soft tissue contusions.
Adrian’s body swayed violently.
“Sophia!”
His throat bobbed as he swallowed, his voice going hoarse.
He rushed into the bedroom and threw open the door of the walk-in closet.
The half of the closet that had once been mine was empty.
The brightly colored dresses he had forbidden me to wear, the rich perfumes he had forbidden me to use.
All of it, along with every trace of me, was gone.
Only in that moment did the vivid red [∞] above Adrian’s head.
Finally stop pulsing.
He finally understood. I hadn’t been gambling with my life to spite him.
I really, truly, no longer wanted him.
Three days later, I returned to that townhouse.
With divorce papers drafted by my attorney in hand.
The front door was ajar. Before I could ring the bell.
Chloe’s sobs drifted out from inside the living room.
“Adrian, why have you been ignoring me these last few days?”
“Sophia still won’t come home?”
There was a thin, buried thread of malice woven into Chloe’s tone.
“Honestly, you didn’t need to get this upset.”
“Her brother clearly caused the crash himself, driving illegally.”
“Sophia just wanted to pin a dead man on us.”
“I asked the nurse in the emergency room that day.”
“Sophia wasn’t hurt at all. She just had a little scrape on her forehead.”
“She was angry that you didn’t spend the anniversary with her. She was using a dead man to disgust me on purpose.”
“And about the computer…”
Chloe paused, her tone growing more innocent by the second.
“I never touched any reset button. Sophia must have wiped the data herself.”
“She lied about there being dash cam footage on it just to make you think I’m evil.”
“She wanted to force you to throw me out. Adrian, how could she use a dead man for a stunt like that?”
I stood in the shadows of the entryway, listening to this masterpiece of a performance.
In the past, I would have stormed in and torn her apart.
I would have proved my innocence to Adrian.
But now, all I felt was a boundless kind of boredom.
“A little scrape?”
Adrian’s voice suddenly cut in.
Then came the sound of a stack of papers being slammed onto the marble coffee table.
I leaned out slightly and saw Adrian sitting on the sofa.
His eyes were bloodshot, fixed on Chloe.
On the coffee table in front of him was a bloodstained diagnostic report.
Chloe’s face drained of color the moment she recognized it.
The fragile innocence she had performed so carefully froze on her features.
“I don’t know! Maybe the nurse got it wrong.”
“The nurse got it wrong? Then explain this.”
Adrian tapped a key on the laptop beside him.
The screech of tires shattered through the living room, followed by my crying voice.
“Ethan! Ethan, please wake up! Don’t fall asleep…”
Chloe’s legs gave way. She dropped straight onto the carpet.
The panic had finally caught her. She began crawling toward Adrian on her hands and knees.
