The Confession
*[Third Person — Ethan’s POV]*
The apartment is dark. Ethan sits on the couch with his face in his hands, phone buzzing nonstop on the coffee table.
Every message says the same thing. *Get Chloe back. Fix this. What is wrong with you.*
He curses under his breath. It’s not like he doesn’t want Chloe back. The problem is she’s turned into someone he doesn’t recognize.
Eight years together. He knows her better than anyone. Chloe is quiet. Passive. The kind of woman who cries a little, sulks a little, then forgives everything.
That’s exactly why he never worried about the affair. Even if she found out, what would she do? Yell? Throw things? She’d never actually leave.
Her paychecks went straight into his account. She had no savings, no connections, nowhere to go. She literally couldn’t leave him.
So what changed?
Maya paces behind him, furious. “This is your fault! People at work figured out who Chloe is. They know I didn’t get her arrested. They’re calling me the other woman online. My reputation is destroyed!”
Ethan pinches the bridge of his nose. He doesn’t answer.
The truth is, Maya was never more than entertainment. She was exciting, wild, the opposite of Chloe’s quiet predictability. Being with her was exciting. Dangerous, even.
But right now, watching her cry and complain, all that attraction turns into pure irritation.
*How did I throw everything away for this woman?*
He stands up. Maya grabs his arm. “Where are you going? Are you leaving me?”
Ethan forces a smile. “I’m going to see Chloe’s mother.”
“She always liked me. She’s been waiting for us to get married. If I talk to her, she’ll pressure Chloe to come back. This isn’t over.”
Maya starts crying. “What about me? Where does that leave me, Ethan?”
He wants to scream. Instead, he cups her face gently. “You and me—that’s real. Chloe is just part of the plan. I’d never leave you.”
Maya bites her lip. “I need to tell you something. But you can’t tell anyone.”
Ethan’s thumb quietly slides across his phone screen. The voice recorder clicks on.
“Go ahead,” he says softly.
“I… I called Chloe’s mom. I told her about us. About the pregnancy. Everything.”
She swallows.
“And she got so upset. She just… she jumped. From the window.”
“I didn’t mean for it to happen. I swear. I didn’t think she’d react like that…”
Ethan’s pulse spikes. His mind races.
*This is it. This is the key.*
If he gives Chloe proof against Maya, Chloe will have to forgive him. No matter what he’s done, this makes him the hero.
He pulls Maya into a hug. “It’s okay. Don’t be scared. I’ll handle everything.”
He grabs his car keys, makes one call, and finds out where Liam took Chloe. Then he drives straight to the cemetery.
But when he arrives, Chloe is already there.
And standing right beside her, one hand resting on her shoulder, is Liam.
