My Husband Buried Our Kids. So I Buried His Legacy. Fair Trade. Chapter 10
The thugs started crying out as the cops pressed them to the floor.
“Dr. Drake! Help us! You told us to come here—”
Lucian stepped forward. Held out his hand, blocking the officers.
“Misunderstanding. It’s all a misunderstanding. I own this house. She’s my wife. This is just a domestic dispute—”
I pushed myself up against the wall. Mouth full of blood. Ribs probably cracked. But I stood straight.
“He’s NOT my husband.” I shouted at the police. “We’re divorced.”
“I’m filing charges—he orchestrated this. Unlawful entry. Assault. I want every single one of them arrested!”
The cop looked at me. Then at Lucian. Hand resting near his belt.
“Ma’am, are you sure—”
“I’m sure.”
The thugs started panicking. Pointing fingers.
“She hired us! She paid us!”
“Yeah! Her! Mira Voss!”
The cop turned. Mira’s face went white.
“Take her in,” the officer said.
Two officers moved toward Mira. She shrieked and threw herself at Lucian.
“Dr. Drake! They’re lying! Say something—”
Lucian shoved her off. Hard. She stumbled, nearly fell.
He rushed to me. Grabbed my wrists. Squeezed so tight my bones ached.
“Are you insane?! What divorce?! That was just a threat! We never filed!”
I raised my hand. Slapped him across the face.
Crack. The whole room went quiet for a second.
Lucian froze. Eyes wide.
He’d known me for ten years. I’d never raised a hand at anyone. The worst I ever did was hang up cold.
“A threat?” I laughed. The motion split my lip. “Lucian Drake, I’m the one who wants out.”
“The day you sent those divorce papers—that’s the first time I ever thanked you.”
“Thank you for being so cold. You made it easy. I didn’t have to lift a finger to cut your garbage ass out of my life.”
“No—” He shook his head. “You’re insane. You’re delusional again. Even if you signed, the courts have procedures—it takes time—we’re not officially—”
He was panicking now. Forced a shaky smile. Arms reaching for me.
“I’m sorry. I was just angry when I sent that. Stop this, okay? I was wrong. Elara. I was wrong. Come on—”
I shoved him back. Slapped him again. The other side.
“You underestimated me.” My voice went cold. “I had the money to make you a star doctor. I have the power to unmake you.”
I pulled the document from my pocket. Thick stack. Court seal stapled in the corner.
Slapped it across his face.
“Read it. Judge’s signature. Filed this morning.”
Pages scattered to the floor. Slid into the grayish-white powder.
Lucian looked down at them. Top page had the state court header. His full name. Mine. Bold black letters:
JUDGMENT OF DISSOLUTION OF MARRIAGE.
He didn’t pick it up. Like his feet were nailed to the floor.
“No…” His voice cracked. “The courts take months… you haven’t even gone through the waiting period—”
“Waiting period can be waived.” I said. “You forgot who my lawyer is.”
“Domestic violence. Unlawful entry. Assault. All filed. Judge signed it this morning.”
“You are no longer my husband. You are nothing.”
“You’re lying…” His voice was shaking now. “You can’t… you loved me. You loved me so much—”
“Elara… let me explain. I never betrayed you. Or the kids. We were supposed to be here for their birthday today—”
“Please. Let’s just forget what happened. We’ll give them a proper birthday. I promise—”
I smiled. Blood on my face. Split lip. Red eyes boring into him.
“The kids?”
“You don’t get to say that word.”
“My children—were killed. By YOU and that BITCH.”
“And now their last remains—the ash you just let your people trample into the floor.”
“You belong in hell.”
“You should spend every night of your life reliving this. Unable to sleep. Unable to escape.”
“You don’t deserve to be a father. You don’t deserve to be a doctor. You don’t deserve to be human.”
