Snakes Over Wolves Chapter 05

Snakes Over Wolves Chapter 05

Some time later, Nathaniel gave me a massive, flawlessly romantic wedding.

Knowing I loved flowers but was allergic to pollen, he’d decorated the entire venue with incredibly realistic artificial blooms.

I was just wondering how he knew my tastes so perfectly when a sudden, raw wolf howl echoed from outside.

An attendant rushed over, telling us a frantic werewolf had shown up. He’d shifted into his wolf form and was tearing wildly at the iron front gates.

I paused, a little stunned. A werebeast only reverted to their wolf form when provoked by extreme emotional distress.

Finding out who Anika really was hadn’t been enough to trigger Cameron’s shift, but witnessing my mating ceremony had pushed him right over the edge.

In the past, I might have thought this meant he actually cared about me. Now, I just thought it was pathetic.

He didn’t appreciate me when he had me. What was the point of all this now?

Nathaniel and I exchanged rings and shared a kiss over the cheers of the crowd.

Later, as we drove away from the mating ceremony toward our new place, a massive silver wolf sat locked inside a giant iron cage out front.

For a split second, I swore I saw Cameron crying — just trapped in that enclosure, watching us leave.

Once we finally had the new house to ourselves, I caught myself blushing as I looked up at Nathaniel.

He was gorgeous. “You know, you’re nothing like the rumors,” I murmured.

He smiled, gently pulling the pins from my hair. “What rumors?”

“That you were cruel. That you were ugly. And…”

He let out a low, soft laugh. “Born sterile?”

I felt a flush of embarrassment and scrambled for something comforting to say, but he just pulled me into his arms.

He looked down at me, his bright green eyes soft and full of affection. “Are you ready, honey?”

Caught up in his gaze, I gave a shy nod.

Later, as things heated up in bed, my eyes went wide with shock. “Wait, why is there an extra one?”

Nathaniel gave a gruff, low murmur. “Sweetheart, you forgot I’m from the Weresnake Tribe. Naturally, I have…”

Well into the night, he thoroughly proved those rumors about his sterility were completely unfounded.

Five days later, the mating process was finally over. The physical toll was so intense I practically shifted back into my fox form.

My lower back was killing me as I dragged myself out of bed, only to hear some sort of commotion outside.

I pushed the window open. Down in the courtyard, Cameron was on his knees, clutching a massive bouquet of roses.

One of the cleaners in the hall told me he’d been out there like that for five whole days.

He’d sat through two pouring rainstorms and even caught a fever, absolutely refusing to leave. He just kept having someone swap out the dead roses for fresh ones.

Honestly, I was just annoyed. Who was he trying to impress with this pathetic little display?

I had moved on and started a new life. Cameron’s self-serving attempt to make amends was nothing but a headache.

I was about to yank the curtains shut when a warm body pressed up against my back.

“What are you looking at, honey?”

Catching sight of the scene down below, Nathaniel frowned.

“He really doesn’t know when to quit.”

Right then, Cameron seemed to sense us and looked up.

The second he saw me, a sudden spark of hope lit up his dull eyes.

But a heartbeat later, Nathaniel bared his teeth in a pure, territorial challenge. He wrapped his arms tightly around me and kissed me, deep and hard.

My face softened with a kind of tenderness Cameron had never seen from me.

I leaned right into the kiss, hugging Nathaniel back.

Seeing us like that clearly tore Cameron apart.

He dropped the roses and scrambled to his feet, his eyes wide and furious. He tried to shout, to make Nathaniel stop, but his throat was so parched from days without water that he couldn’t even make a sound.
