My Fiancé Betrayed The Wrong Mafia Heiress Chapter 18
Every Traitor Pays
Three months later, Ethan Carter enters federal court in handcuffs.
Vanessa sits at the defense table across from him.
The moment she sees him, relief crosses her face.
She still believes he is going to save her.
Then Ethan takes the stand.
He admits that the Carter and Vale families arranged our marriage to protect their wealth, influence, and public image.
He admits that he continued his affair with Vanessa while preparing to marry me.
He admits that Daniel discovered the truth about the murdered reporter and the money flowing between both families.
Then the prosecutor asks about Vanessa’s pregnancy.
Ethan looks directly at her.
“She was never pregnant.”
Vanessa shoots to her feet.
“You knew!”
“No,” Ethan says. “I found out after the wedding.”
The prosecutor presents messages Vanessa sent to Mrs. Vale, discussing the falsified test results from the family clinic.
Ethan confirms that Vanessa later confessed everything to him.
She invented the pregnancy because she was afraid he would abandon her once he married me.
Vanessa stares at him as if she no longer recognizes him.
“You said you loved me.”
Ethan’s expression does not change.
“I said what I needed to say.”
The words sound familiar.
He once said the same thing about me.
Now Vanessa finally understands what it feels like to build her life around a man who only sees her as useful.
She begins screaming that Ethan planned everything. That he promised they would be together after the wedding. That she only followed his instructions because she trusted him.
Ethan does not look at her again.
His testimony helps convict his father, several Carter officials, and the men involved in Daniel’s death and the reporter’s murder.
It does not save him.
The judge lists the crimes Ethan committed under the protection of his position: obstruction, conspiracy, evidence tampering, corruption, and his role in covering up two deaths.
His cooperation reduces some of the charges.
He is still sentenced to life in federal prison.
Vanessa is convicted of fraud, conspiracy, falsifying medical records, and helping conceal the evidence Daniel collected.
As the officers take her away, she twists toward Ethan.
“I gave up everything for you!”
For the first time, he looks at her.
“And now you have nothing.”
Neither does he.
Mr. and Mrs. Vale lose their clinic, their properties, and every company they spent their lives protecting. Both receive prison sentences for fraud, conspiracy, and their role in hiding my identity.
The Carter empire is divided among creditors and seized by federal authorities.
The family name Ethan once valued above everything becomes permanently connected to corruption and murder.
My uncle faces a different reckoning.
Luca preserved records from the training ground: payments, orders, names, punishments, and the deaths my uncle tried to erase.
My father strips him of every title before turning the evidence over to the authorities.
The man who locked children underground because he wanted to control the Moretti family spends the rest of his life behind another locked door.
No guards obey him there.
No one calls him sir.
He becomes exactly what he once told me I was.
Powerless.
Replaceable.
Forgotten.
When the final sentencing ends, Ethan asks to speak to me.
I almost refuse.
Then I decide I want to see what remains of the man I once planned to marry.
We face each other through a glass partition.
He looks older. Smaller.
Nothing like the man whose approval once controlled my entire life.
“Serena,” he says through the phone.
“That isn’t my name.”
His fingers tighten around the receiver.
“Serafina.”
He says it badly.
The name does not belong in his mouth.
“I made a mistake,” he says. “Vanessa manipulated me.”
“You betrayed Daniel. You betrayed me. You helped both families use my identity, and when I exposed you, your family tried to kill me.”
“I didn’t order the attack.”
“But you helped create everything that led to it.”
He lowers his eyes.
“I did love you.”
“No. You loved what marrying me could give you.”
His face twists.
“If I had known who you really were—”
I laugh.
That is the closest Ethan ever comes to honesty.
If he had known I was a Moretti, he would have treated me better.
Not because I deserved better.
Because he would have feared me.
“Goodbye, Ethan.”
I hang up before he can answer.
Luca is waiting outside the courthouse.
He does not ask what Ethan said. He only opens the car door for me and offers his hand.
I take it.
One year later, my father formally names me head of the Moretti family.
The people gathered in the estate bow as I enter wearing my mother’s ring.
Luca stands beside the empty chair to my right.
He begins to kneel.
“Don’t,” I say.
He stops immediately.
“You’ve spent enough of your life kneeling.”
I hold out my hand.
“Stand beside me.”
Luca rises and takes it.
His thumb brushes the ring on my finger.
“You once said your authority, loyalty, and life belonged to me,” I remind him.
“They still do.”
“That isn’t enough.”
His expression changes.
“What else do you want?”
I take a second ring from my pocket and place it in his palm.
“For once, Luca, try asking for something.”
He stares at the ring, then at me.
“Will you marry me?”
I raise an eyebrow.
“That sounds dangerously close to an order.”
A smile slowly appears on his face.
He lowers his head and kisses my hand.
“Then consider it a request from a man who has wanted you for most of his life.”
I let him wait for three seconds.
“Yes.”
Luca slides the ring onto my finger and kisses me in front of the entire Moretti family.
Years ago, he opened an iron gate and told me to run.
This time, neither of us runs.
I am Serafina Moretti.
He is the man who set me free.
And now, by my own choice, Luca becomes my mafia husband.
