My Family Chose My Sister Over My Love And I Disappeared Chapter 05

On the other side of town, once Ethan had wrapped up the last of the wedding logistics, he headed straight back to the apartment.

There was no one home.

The moment his phone powered on, dozens of missed calls from the hospital flooded the screen.

Then he read the text, and his whole body went rigid.

【Is this the family of Ms. Sloane Carter?】

【The patient is currently in surgery following a miscarriage. Please come as soon as possible to handle the paperwork.】

“Miscarriage?”

Ethan stared at the screen, mumbling to himself, unable to accept it.

“When did Sloane get pregnant? Why didn’t she tell me?”

“No. There has to be a mistake.”

He immediately dialed Sloane’s number. All he got was the cold automated voice.

“Sorry, the number you have dialed is no longer in service…”

Sloane had disconnected her number?

Ethan refused to believe it and kept dialing, over and over.

Same message every time.

By the time he’d gone through every social account he could reach her on, one fact had settled into his spine like ice.

Sloane was gone. And she had no intention of coming back.

He tore through the apartment like a man losing his mind, hunting for any trace of her, however small.

But from the bedroom to the office, there was nothing.

Just when he sank to the floor in defeat, his eye caught a cardboard box tucked under the bed.

Almost without thinking, he dragged it out and opened it.

Inside, neatly stacked, was every gift he had ever given her.

The hair clip they’d picked out together at a flea market back in college. The chocolate box he’d made by hand one Valentine’s Day.

Ethan sat there stunned. It had never crossed his mind that she’d kept all of it.

He kept going, and pulled out two cookbooks.

Every page marked up in different colored highlighter.

【His stomach is sensitive. This one is easy on it.】

【He loves shrimp. Add a little extra here.】

That was the moment Ethan finally understood how much Sloane had loved him.

Far more than he’d ever guessed.

He scrambled up off the floor and called Diana.

“Diana, Sloane… she’s gone.”

There was a pause on the other end, and then Diana’s voice came through, casual as anything.

“Oh. Got it.”

“Don’t worry about it. She’s doing this on purpose. She just wants attention.”

Richard picked up the thread.

“Yeah. She’s been pulling this since she was a kid. The second something doesn’t go her way, she either fakes sick or runs off.”

Julian chimed in.

“Here we go again. So annoying.”

Then Madison’s voice cut in.

“Ethan, just let her be for now.”

“Sienna’s about to wake up. You need to get back here. She’ll lose it if she opens her eyes and you’re not there.”

Ethan had not expected any of this.

“I’m serious. Sloane had a miscarriage.”

“Check your phones. The hospital must have texted you too.”

Diana, half-skeptical, opened her messages.

“Huh. There is one.”

“That Sloane. Trying to compete with Sienna for attention. She’ll stoop to anything.”

Richard let out a scoff.

“That girl gets worse by the day. Now she’s forging texts from doctors.”

Only Madison actually looked at the sender.

“Guys. This doesn’t look fake.”

“Sloane… you don’t think something actually happened to her, do you?”
