The words hit me like ice water.
Not bad enough yet.
Hunter grins. Grabs a full bottle of whiskey. Yanks my head back by my hair.
Pours it straight down my throat.
I can’t swallow fast enough. It floods my mouth, my chin, my neck, soaks the front of my shirt. I choke. Cough. Whiskey burns everywhere.
Every fantasy I had — every stupid little maybe he cares — dies right there on the VIP room floor.

Xander takes a picture of me.
Sends it.
My burner buzzes on the table.
Two new messages from Xander light up the screen.
“Your little assistant’s looking pretty rough right now.”
“Still ignoring me?”
Hunter notices me staring at the phone. He walks over. Picks it up. Waves it in my face.
“Don’t bother. I paid off the whole club. Nobody’s coming.”
He leans in close. His breath is disgusting.
“Or… you could just beg me. Nice and sweet. Spend the night with me and I’ll call it off.”
I clench my teeth. Say nothing.
He grabs my chin. Forces another shot down.
My stomach is on fire. My head is underwater. Everything’s blurring.
Xander is still on the couch, staring at his phone. Frown deepening. His “Nina” isn’t answering.
Finally, he hits call.
My burner rings on the table.
Hunter looks down at it. Confused.
“Who the hell’s blowing up your phone?”
He picks it up.
I try to lunge for it. My arms don’t work.
Hunter squints at the lockscreen. A slow, gross smile spreads across his face.
“‘Baby’? Aww, Lindy has a *boyfriend*?”
He tilts the phone toward his buddies. They cackle.
“Bet he’d cry if he saw you right now.”
Xander’s head snaps up. Finally.
He looks at me. Really looks.
I’m slumped between two guys. Shirt soaked. Chin dripping. Fever burning up my face.
I force my voice out. Cracked. Hoarse.
“Give me my phone.”
Hunter ignores me. He’s having too much fun.
“So pretty. Who got there first, huh? You and this ‘baby’ ever hooked up?”
I don’t answer.
“No? Guess I’ll just look for myself.”
He grabs my jaw. Wrenches my face up. Points the phone at me.

Unlocked.
His buddies crowd around. Laughing. Scrolling.
The room is spinning. My eyes are closing.
Just before I black out—
One of them chokes.
“Yo — YO. WHAT THE FUCK. Why does ‘Baby’ have Xander’s face?!”
