Revenge On My Feet Chapter 28
After the session, the university arranged a group photo.
The photographer asked everyone to gather in closer.
Out of old habit, I drifted to the very edge.
Yvonne tapped my shoulder from behind.
“The person in charge stands in the middle.”
I froze for a second, then walked to the center of the team.
The flash went off.
The photo showed up on the camera’s screen a moment later.
This time, no one had pushed me aside.
My whole face was in the frame.
So was my prosthetic.
I studied it for a few seconds, then sent the photo to the project group chat.
Then I switched off the screen and walked out of the auditorium with my team.
On the day my five-year contract expired, a heavy downpour hit New York.
Yvonne laid the renewal documents on my desk.
“The new position can be based in New York, or you can go lead the new team in Boston.”
“The foundation is also hoping you’ll take part in the national project. The choice is yours.”
I opened the documents.
Five years ago, I had chosen New York to get away from Desmond.
Only later did I realize that a city doesn’t stand for just one person.
Boston held the steps where I had fallen, but it also held the first major project I had ever signed on my own.
New York had taken me in when I was broken, and it had watched me slowly become the person I was now.
Neither city could decide my future for me anymore.
“I’ll stay in New York.”
Yvonne looked a little surprised.

“I’ll stay in New York.”
Yvonne looked a little surprised.
“You don’t want to go back to Boston?”
“I’ll go back for business trips. I’ll visit the project.”
I smiled.
“But I like my home now.”
She handed me the pen.
“Then welcome aboard, again.”
