The Cat Who Spent Nine Lives Saving Me Chapter 12
My mother sat in the kitchen, tapping the table smugly.
“So now you’ve learned to keep things behind my back? If you can lie when you’re this young, will you abandon your parents when you grow up?”
I searched the whole house, then dropped to my knees in front of her and asked where the kitten was.
She slowly sipped her coffee.
“I took it to the county animal-control shelter. Strays nobody wants usually don’t make it through the day.”
My head rang.
The shelter’s yellow receipt was still clipped to the refrigerator. At the bottom, it read: If no kennel space is available, the animal may be euthanized immediately.
I ran barefoot into the blizzard and followed the highway for miles. By the time a patrol officer found me, I was too cold to speak.
After I was brought home, my mother wept in front of the neighbors, saying she had wasted years raising a vicious daughter who would defy her own mother over a filthy animal.
After that, I never kept another pet.
Not until I stood on the roof and met Domino.
Lost in my fever, I struggled as though I were drowning and could only ask over and over, “Why did you send my kitten away to die?”
Just before I lost consciousness, I heard a familiar voice.
[Don’t die. Cat doesn’t have many lives left.]
[You have no idea. To get back to you, Cat nearly shredded the registry at Heaven’s Administrative Office…]
