The Cat Who Spent Nine Lives Saving Me Chapter 13

Sunny barked outside Maeve’s door until she came out. Maeve and Rowan broke into my apartment and called an ambulance.

Not long after my fever broke, my parents and Nolan stormed into my hospital room with a phone held aloft. They started a livestream accusing me of making money from a pet-loving persona while refusing to help my “struggling family.”

A man my father had brought reached down and pinned Sunny. Domino charged him and raked bloody scratches across the back of his hand.

“You damned animal!”

I yanked out my IV, used the bed rail to steady myself, and moved in front of them.

“Don’t touch them.”

My mother immediately dropped to her knees and wept for the camera.

“You can abandon your parents, but Nolan is your only brother! His wedding is going to be canceled because of you. Are animals really more important than people?”

Sunny barked furiously. She stepped back, malice flashing through her eyes.

“He’s bitten someone before. Animal Control can have him put down immediately.”

I looked toward the security camera outside the hospital room.

“You trespassed in my shop and attacked me. He was stopping you from hurting me. Today, you were the ones who struck first again. Every second of the footage will go to the police and my lawyer.”

I held Domino tightly.

“You never wanted a daughter. You wanted a credit card that would pay Nolan’s bills. As of today, that card has been canceled.”

Security officers and the police soon arrived. When I was admitted, I had already asked the nurse to put them on the prohibited-visitors list and call the police if they appeared.

I hadn’t protected that kitten years ago.

This time, no one would hurt my children.
